Gyanvapi Mosque Management Challenges Varanasi Court Order Allowing Hindu Prayers

Gyanvapi Mosque

The Gyanvapi management committee took swift action on Thursday by moving the Allahabad High Court to challenge a controversial Varanasi court order allowing Hindu prayers in the mosque’s cellar. This legal development follows a series of events that have heightened tensions between religious communities and raised questions about the sanctity of religious spaces.

Legal Battle Unfolds

The counsel for the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee, S F A Naqvi, confirmed that an urgent hearing has been requested in the matter. This move comes shortly after the Supreme Court directed the mosque committee to approach the Allahabad High Court following its refusal to hear the plea against the Varanasi district court’s order.

Grounds of Appeal

In their appeal before the high court, the mosque committee contends that the Hindu side’s suit is itself barred by order 7 rule 11 of the Civil Procedure Code. Additionally, they allege that the primary objective behind filing the suit was to stir controversy over the functioning Gyanvapi mosque, where regular prayers are offered.

Community Responses and Actions

Meanwhile, the Hindu side, represented by lawyer Madan Mohan Yadav, has emphasized historical practices of worship in the mosque’s cellar, citing instances before its interruption in 1993.

Following the Varanasi court’s ruling, prayers were conducted in the cellar, supervised by a nominated “pujari” from the Kashi Vishwanath temple trust. The district administration promptly facilitated the arrangements in compliance with the court’s directives.

In response, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee has called upon Muslims to observe a symbolic protest by closing their shops and businesses on Friday and offering special “Juma” prayers. The appeal underscores the need for maintaining peace and order during this period, urging Muslims to adhere to their regular prayer routines.

Conclusion

The legal dispute surrounding the Gyanvapi mosque reflects broader tensions and challenges concerning religious freedom and communal harmony. As the legal battle unfolds in the courts, community leaders strive to uphold peace and mutual respect amidst heightened emotions and sentiments.
